Holiday decorators light the community
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

Brad and Denise Renspe have been decorating their house at 535 Grand Ave. for 15 years - and this year it paid off.

The Renspe family won the 2008 Kiwanis Club Christmas light contest and couldn't be more delighted.

"We've been doing this for 15 years and it keeps growing every year," said Denise Renspe.

Decorating takes more than stringing a few lights in the trees, she said. The process usually takes two full days, more than one person and includes a schematic of where lights should be plugged in so the circuits don't blow.

The Renspe home was chosen from all houses within New Richmond city limits after Kiwanis Club members toured the city in search of the most festive, best lit home.

Seven Kiwanis members toured the four quadrants of New Richmond, making notes and recording the addresses of possible winners. After the initial tour, finalists were chosen and a final judging panel was assembled. The judging panel made another pass of the finalists homes and the Renspe family was awarded the winner.

The Kiwanis Club members weren't the only people to drive passed the Renspe home, Denise Renspe said.

"We enjoy the lights ourselves, but we want others to also," she said. "There are lots of cars that drive by the house and we love to see that."

Twelve homes were chosen as the finalists. Here's a list of the other winners and finalists addresses:

• Second place: Pete and Mary Rogoski, 914 Ron Drive.

• Third place: Arthur and Jeanie Rendell, 925 Fairfield Road

• Honorable mention: Alexander Sword, 133 N. Green Ave.

The other finalists were:

• 321 W. First St.

• 1360 Pheasant Run

• 1463 Wood Duck Lane

• 250 E. Sixth St.

• 532 W. Fifth St.

• 800 Marshall Road

• 220 W. Sixth St.

• 1450 Creek Wood Drive

"We all had a great evening and thank everyone who has braved the bitter cold this early December and put up lights helping us all smile and be happy this holiday season," said Jill Novotne, Kiwanis Club member.
