While the heat was bordering on oppressive on Saturday, it wasn't enough to keep runners away from the 33rd annual Willow River Run.

More than 180 runners took part in the three sections of the race, which is a traditional part of New Richmond's Fun Fest. The race starts and ends at New Richmond's scenic Mary Park.

The large percentage of the competitors in Saturday's races were in the 5K race, where there were 123 finishers. Chris Kamruth, 29, of Chippewa Falls, was the 5K champion. He finished in 17 minutes, 47 seconds.

The upper tier of the 5K race was filled with a higher percentage of younger runners than in most years. Only four of the top 16 runners were under 21 years old.

The 10K race was impressively won by Jacob Ball of Hudson. He finished the race in 32:16, two minutes ahead of second place runner Jarrod Berget of New Richmond. Forty-five runners completed the 10K course.

The morning's events were completed with the running of the Kids' Mile Run. Kids ranging from 3 to 11 years old took part in the race, which had a field of 18 runners this year.
