Ice joy riders face charges
Three college students took a joy ride on a floating ice chunk on the Chippewa River, prompting emergency crews to respond for a rescue operation.
Matt Turek, 18, and two friends, ages 19 and 21, purposely went floating down the Chippewa River early Friday morning. A campus police officer apparently saw the scene and reported it as an emergency.
According to news reports, about 20 emergency personnel responded to the call and pulled the students from the ice.
The three University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students were charged with disorderly conduct in the case, but Turek apparently claims the trio never actually needed help.
The disorderly conduct citation could carry fines of $199. The student could also be billed for the cost of the rescue effort.
The students claim they will fight the legal action.
