Inspectors seek cause of large diesel spill on Mississippi River near La Crosse

Inspectors are still trying to determine what caused the spilling of diesel fuel that spread for six miles on the Mississippi River near La Crosse.

The slick was first noticed last Thursday.

It happened between Dakota, Minn., and the river's Lock and Dam No. 7 near Dresbach. An estimated 1,000 gallons of diesel were spilled.

The Coast Guard said there was no commercial traffic in the area at the time. Investigators from both Minnesota and Wisconsin are looking into the matter.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
