Iraqi forces start providing security; Red Arrow Brigade deployment not affected

Email

It's National Sovereignty Day in Iraq, where the U.S. military is handing over security duties to Iraqi forces in urban areas.

But the move does not affect the 32-hundred Wisconsin National Guard members who were recently sent to Iraq.

Lt. Col. Tim Donovan says none of the units in the 32nd Red Arrow Brigade are assigned to missions which involve combat forces in Iraqi cities.

They'll continue their security details at seven locations where they provide defense at bases.

They're also guarding detainees, training Iraqi prison guards, and doing support work.

Today's move is the first major step toward withdrawing combat troops by August of next year, and all U.S. forces by the end of 2011.

The Red Arrow Brigade's deployment is expected to continue until early next year.
