Jump Start begins in NR
Students in New Richmond are already hitting the books in an attempt to ready themselves for the new school year.
The district's Jump Start program started on July 30 for students in grades 6-8; it will run from Aug. 13-23 for elementary students.
Jessica Ferguson, director of curriculum and instruction, said the program was designed for students who need extra help with math and reading.
"We can't raise someone's skills another grade level in those eight days, but we can help get them back into the mindset and help them get back into the swing of things," she said.
Twenty-eight middle school students registered for Jump Start this year, Ferguson said. One hundred fourteen registered for the elementary program.
"That's about on par for what we wanted and expected for this type of program," she said.
While Jump Start is open to all students in grades 1-8, Ferguson said parents with struggling students were encouraged to enroll their kids.
"This is just to give them a little extra support before school starts," she said.
This is the third year the Jump Start program has been offered to students. For more information, contact the district offices at 715-243-7411.
