Jury finds trucker innocent of knowingly hauling pot
A jury in La Crosse has found a California trucker innocent of knowingly hauling a half-ton of marijuana.
Marco Corzo, 54, was released from jail yesterday for the first time since his arrest last November. Corzo and Gurmit Singh, 38, also of Palmdale Calif., were arrested at a weigh station off Interstate 90 in West Salem.
State Patrol inspectors had found 15 cartons with more than 10,000 grams of marijuana in wrapped-up packages.
Prosecutors said the two strayed from a route they were taking between New York and San Diego, and they tried to deceive authorities.
But defense lawyer Daniel Ryan said the state never proved that Corzo had any idea what was in the truck.
Singh owns the vehicle and his partner blamed him for the crime.
Singh is scheduled to go on trial in late July. For now, he's free on bond.
