Kanewischer named Tiger girls hoops coach
Jeff Kanewischer has been hired as the new girls varsity basketball coach at New Richmond High School.
Kanewischer has a strong basketball background. He coached two years in the system at the University of Great Falls in Montana. Last year he was a freshman coach at Goldendale High School in Washington State.
Pronounced can-a-wish-er, the new Tiger coach is a newlywed. He married the former Erica Weekes, a Hudson native, in August. That's what brought Kanewischer to this area. They met when they worked as counselors at a Bible camp together for several years.
Kanewischer was born and raised in Montana. He then attended Creighton University in Omaha. Creighton is known to have outstanding academic and athletic programs, a combination that drew Kanewischer's attention. Kanewischer was a "gray shirt" for the Creighton men's basketball team, meaning he practiced with the team but was not on the varsity roster.
After attending Creighton he earned his master's degree while coaching at the University of Great Falls.
One of his goals for the Tiger program will be to develop the complete student-athlete.
"With the student coming first," said Kanewischer. "If they don't have the grades, they won't be on the court."
For his on-court style, Kanewischer said he prefers an uptempo game with his team pressing on defense.
"I like to call it an educated game. We're smart enough in our defense and offense and the kids know their roles to play to the best of their abilities," he said.
Kanewischer teaches earth science and accelerated math at the New Richmond Middle School.
