Kiwanis Club selects winner of the best lighting display contest
After much deliberation and discussion after their citywide search for the best Christmas light display in New Richmond, the panel of Kiwanis Club Christmas Lighting Contest judges decided the Dennis Family, at 1914 W. Seventh St., are the winners of this year’s contest.
Coming in second was last year’s winner, the Smallidge Family, at 315 Greaton Rd., while Earl and Mary Andersen, at 1463 Wooduck Lane, took third.
“The first few winners are easy to identify. After that we have a lot more discussion to determine the rest of the winners,” said Kiwanis Club President Erin Eneboe, who was part of the group that judged the lighting displays. “Although it seemed like there were less houses lit this year, the effort from those that did was quite impressive.”
The Kiwanis Club’s delegation of judges, headed by committee chairman Joel Pederson, took to the streets on Wednesday, Dec. 18, to look for the best lighting displays they could find. The contest, according to Eneboe, is meant to encourage members of the community to decorate their homes and help show off New Richmond in all its glory during the holiday season.
“The use of smart phones really made things easier this year,” Eneboe said. “Each team took photos of their favorites so they could recall them once we reconvened. For example, my team had two pages of possibilities -- we labeled the address with the picture number so we could remember them while selecting our favorites.”
The judges picked their top six favorite lighting displays out of the many houses in New Richmond.
Finishing in fourth was Jordan and Ashley Slominski, at 158 Williams Ave., while Jim and Sharon Beebe, at 250 Sixth St., took fifth. The Jepsen’s, at 611 Eighth St., were sixth in the competition.
