The leadership of the Somerset Board of Education has been realigned.

Allison Klis, who had served as the clerk of the board last year, was elected as the new chairperson of the board of education. She switches places with Sharon Germain, who now becomes clerk. Germain has served as the chair of the board for the past three years.

Klis has served for two years on the board. She said she doesn't bring any agenda to the position and tries to see things objectively.

"I'm for what's good for kids," she said.

With the recent referendum approval to purchase the DeCosse property, Klis said the board can concentrate more on the current needs of the district than on the long-term needs.

"Mostly I want to see that we're running a tight ship and see we're spending the taxpayers' money wisely," she said.

Klis is self-employed in commercial property management, so she will have the time available to dedicate herself to the board chair responsibilities.

"The board has worked so well together and that's one of the things I want to continue," she said.

Klis said she has received great feedback from the community and keeping the lines of communication open with community members is one of her main goals.

Germain said she thinks the board chair position should go to someone new every few years.

"I feel it's a job that should be shared. Everyone has something to bring to that position," Germain said.

Germain said that with her committee assignments and clerk position, she will remain quite active on the board. Germain is now the senior member of the school board with the recent retirement of Mike Connor and Carol Belisle. She said the board has worked hard to come to decisions. She said board members don't always agree with all of the board's decisions, but they all support each decision.

"It's always been the focus of this board to remain a team," Germain said. "I have a good feeling about how we work together."

Tim Witzmann returns as vice president of the board and Marie Colbeth continues as treasurer of the school board. The other members of the board are Ron Hay Jr. and newly-elected Catherine Cranston and Brian Moulton.
