L. Gail Swanson, 82

L. Gail Swanson of New Richmond died suddenly on Tuesday, May 5, at St. Croix Regional Hospital at the age of 82.

Gail was born in the family farm house on May 14, 1926 in Stillwater, Minn. to Leonard and Ellen Swanson. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stillwater. Gail walked through pastures that are residential today to attend a one room school near the present Cub Foods store just north of Highway 36.

In 1936 his family moved to a hilly and rocky farm on County Road H in St. Croix County, Wis. with one horse and very few possessions. Farming, cutting wood and hard work fed the family and paid the taxes through the Depression. In 1938 the family moved to the present dairy farm.

Gail was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in East Farmington and later graduated from New Richmond High School in 1943.

On May 7, 1950 Gail married Helen Wurst at Zion Lutheran Church and took over the farm while his dad Leonard became a farm equipment dealer. Hard work and dairy farming filled his days and he was fortunate to live on a farm his entire life. He loved harnesses and horses and giving the grandchildren rides in his sleighs and wagons.

He loved the Lord, his family, friends, neighbors, his dairy farm and horses. His battle with Lyme's Disease slowed his body but never his mind. His sons, daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, friends and neighbors were lucky to share his love of farming and working together.

Gail was preceded in death by his parents and sister Joyce Hjelle.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; sons David (Rita) of Woodville, Scott of New Richmond, Doug (Heidi) of New Richmond, Craig of New Richmond; daughter Trudi (Randy) Getschel of New Richmond; grandchildren Heather (Derek) Mann, Joel Swanson, Heath Swanson, Kurt Getschel, Michelle (Jason) Kiecker, Chelsea Getschel; great-grandsons Blake and Bryce Mann; step-grandson Christopher Moreno; step-great-granddaughter Morgan; brothers Wayne (Vivian) Swanson of Osceola, Keith (Rose) Swanson of Danbury; sister Karen (Lee) Mallin of Roseville; in-laws Iris Holm, Donald Wurst and Elaine and Jim Brian; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
