Legislative committee to oversee state computer projects almost ready
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

A new state legislative committee to oversee the government's computer projects is finally moving forward.

There used to be such a panel. But it disbanded before a series of bungled computer projects unfolded over the last few years, costing taxpayers more than $200 million.

A state audit recommended nine months ago that the oversight panel be brought back.

Now, Assembly Speaker Rep. Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, is almost ready to appoint his members.

Majority Democrats in the Senate made their appointments long ago. But the Assembly waited until another computer task force Huebsch created earlier had finished its work

The head of that panel, Rep. Phil Montgomery, R-Ashwaubenon, said the delay was worth it.

He said it allowed the task force to suggest ways to fix the ongoing snafus.

They included uniform rules on projects throughout state government and the use of less complicated software when it's practical.
