Local youth wrestlers qualify for state meet

Youth wrestlers from New Richmond, Somerset and St. Croix Central will be competing this weekend, with dreams of bringing home a state championship.


The Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Folkstyle Kids State Tournament is this Friday and Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Weigh-in is at 2 p.m. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m.

Here is a rundown on the state qualifiers from each of the local school districts.

New Richmond

Four New Richmond youth wrestlers have qualified to compete at state this weekend. They are Bode Gabriel, Tyler Dennis, Tyler Larson and Jake LaVenture. They advanced to state at the WWF regional tournament held in River Falls on March 15-16.

Gabriel qualified by taking second place in the 63-pound class in the 2005-06 age group.

Dennis advanced by placing second in the 90-pound class in the 2003-04 age group.

Larson also is competing in the 2003-04 age group, after taking second place at 95 pounds.

LaVenture took first place in the 140-pound class at the regional tournament. He competes in the 2001-02 age group.


The Somerset Wrestling Club will be represented by Juliauna Belisle, Ellie Melvin, Abby Bushinger and Hunter Neubarth at the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Youth State Tournament. They were among 20 Somerset wrestlers who competed in the regional tournament on March 15-16 at River Falls.

St. Croix Central

Myah Olson had to defeat one opponent to qualify for the state tournament. She faced Savannah Curtis of Lodi. They had an extremely close battle, with neither wrestler able to score in the first two periods. Olson got the upper hand quickly in the third period, pinning Curtis 21 seconds into the final period.
