Longtime New Richmond, Wis., man dies from accidental gunshot wound
Mike Geraghty, 55, of rural New Richmond was found dead Sunday morning in a farm field.
According to St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts, Geraghty was outside hunting coyotes when the accident occurred.
Shilts said it appears Geraghty was trying to get through or step over a fence when his rifle accidently discharged.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene around 11:43 a.m. Sunday, but the accident likely occurred 10 to 11 hours prior to that, Shilts said.
Shilts said the family indicated that coyotes have been a problem for the farm in the past.
"They've had a history of issues with coyotes," Shilts said. "Some coyotes had killed some of their calves."
He said it's not unusual for local farmers to try and remove or scare off coyotes.
Geraghty was a City of New Richmond streets department employee for about 30 years, according to City Administrator Dennis Horner.
"We're all in shock," Horner said. "It's a real tragedy. Mike was a good worker, and a good person with a great heart. We're all going to miss him, that's for sure."
