Madison aims for October to start recycling plastic bags
People in Madison might have to start recycling their plastic bags by the end of October.
The City Council voted 17-1 in June to make people drop off their shopping and other plastic bags at collection centers.
And Tuesday, the Council will be asked to approve $32,000 in funding.
Most of the money would buy 10 large collection containers to be put at various spots throughout Madison.
The remaining $5,000 would be used for promotional and educational campaigns for the new law.
There are penalties of up to $400 for those ticketed for not recycling their plastic bags more than twice in a year, but city recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said he did not expect the Street Division to issue tickets.
