Many sporting events planned for 2008 Fun Fest celebration

One of the guarantees with New Richmond's Fun Fest is there will always be plenty of sports events to take part in or to spectate.

Here's a rundown on the Fun Fest sports events for 2008.

Baseball

There will be a twinbill of baseball at Citizens Field on Friday. The New Richmond American Legion baseball team plays at home at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, with Grantsburg as the opponent.

That game will be followed by the New Richmond Millers adult baseball game, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Millers will continue their tradition of facing the Osceola Braves in the Fun Fest game.

Softball

The annual Fun Fest Softball Tournament begins at Hatfield Park on Friday night. Here is a rundown of the first-round pairings for this year's tournament.

Forty-four teams are competing in this year's tournament. Championship games are scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.

Tennis

The New Richmond Tennis Open starts at 5 p.m. on Friday at the High School tennis courts and goes all weekend. The tournament features several age levels for male, female and co-ed teams. For more information on the Tennis Open, call 246-9787.

Distance running

The annual Willow River Run/Walk starts at Mary Park, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Call 247-5995 for more information.

Soccer

The eighth annual New Richmond Fun Fest 5 vs. 5 Socccer Tournament is scheduled for Saturday. Registration forms and information can be downloaded from the New Richmond Soccer Club Web site at www.nrsoccer.com.

The tournament will be played at the St. Croix Press fields. Age brackets range from U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, 19-plus and 30-plus. Entry fee is $75 per team, with each team getting to play a minimum of two games. Play will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Canoeing

The Friends of the Willow will hold their annual canoe races on Saturday. The canoe race will start at 11:30 a.m. from Mary Park. Anyone interested may call 246-4109 for more information.
