When she began her employment on Knowles Avenue in 1977, Mercer recalled that Larson's was quite a different operation. The store was your typical hardware store, selling everything from nuts and bolts to LP gas.

In recent years, Larson's has converted into an appliance sales and repair business.

"Everything has changed," Mercer said.

Mercer, who has lived in the New Richmond area since 1943, began her work career as an employee in Schultz's Dime Store and Norm's Dime Store. Later she worked at Doboy Plastics and Otto's Restaurant. She also worked as a babysitter quite often.

As she prepares for retirement, Mercer said she's enjoyed her time at Larson's.

"It didn't keep me out of mischief though," she joked.

Mercer said she'll miss her co-workers and the people who have been devoted customers over the years.

"I've always enjoyed seeing everyone come by and visiting with them," she said.

She won't miss the business's continued transition to computers.

"I'm just too old to learn anything like that," she admitted.

As for her plans in retirement, Mercer said she doesn't have anything specific in mind.

"I'll probably just sit out on my deck and watch everybody else going to work," she said with a laugh.
