Another local soldier was welcomed home during a special ceremony Friday night.

Family and friends gathered at Mary Park in New Richmond to celebrate Rob Teigen's recently completed four-year stint with the Marine Corps.

He returned to the area July 22, with plans of moving to West Virginia in August to start a new job in the oil drilling industry.

Teigen, the son of Jerry Teigen and Carol Newhouse, spent two tours of duty in Iraq, the most recent from August 2006 to March of 2007. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton near San Diego.

Representatives from the New Richmond VFW Post #10818 were on hand to conduct a welcome home ceremony, which included a color guard detail.

"This is way too fancy for a guy like me," Teigen said with a laugh.

Richard Glasgow, with the American Hero non-profit organization, presented Teigen with a commemorative gold coin and a card with a "welcome home" message.

It read: "Dear American Hero, I am not certain as to how to express my gratitude for all you have done to secure my freedom. Please accept this simple card as a small token of my appreciation. -- A grateful American citizen."

Glasgow said more than 1.7 million welcome home cards have been given to returning veterans nationwide.

"No soldier should come come without a welcome like this," Glasgow said. "They serve our nation for four years. It's a big commitment on their part."

The veterans group also recognized Teigen's parents and their shared sacrifice.

Jerry Teigen reminded those in attendance to remember those who remain overseas and those who have died in the fight for freedom.

The VFW invites any other returning soldiers, or recently discharged soldiers, to call for a similar welcome home celebration. Contact Art Rendell at 246-5438 for more information or to make arrangements.
