The 12-year-old Whitwam was honored by Prudential as a "distinguished finalist" in a Wisconsin competition to recognize community service projects conducted by young people.

Whitwam, a sixth grader at New Richmond Middle School, began "Bookworm Wednesdays," a weekly book club for young kids in her neighborhood.

Whitwam uses the club to loan out books and promote reading among her friends and neighbors.

Whitwam's service project was among 20,000 considered for the Prudential award.

The top youth volunteers who were honored came from Lancaster and North Freedom in Wisconsin.

Schnitzler said he was happy to recognize Whitwam for her efforts to strengthen the bonds of our community and to serve as a role model for others.

"Moments like this are great for me," Schnitzler said as he presented Whitwam with a newly approved resolution from the council. "Maybe she'll be mayor here in another 10, 15 or 20 years."
