McCarthy says the entire 3-4 defensive scheme has been introduced
Green Bay Packers' coach Mike McCarthy says the entire 3-4 defensive scheme has been introduced to the players, and he calls that refreshing.
The Packers are becoming the first team in the NFC North to break away from the 4-3 set-up, after new defensive coordinator Dom Capers won with the 3-4 at Carolina.
McCarthy says he credits both the coaches and the players for getting comfortable with the new scheme and it happened because so many players showed up for voluntary workouts in the spring.
One player who didn't was Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins, whose father was ill before he died recently.
There have also been reports that he's unhappy with his contract.
Wednesday, Collins did some early jogging before going off with a group of players who are recovering from injuries.
McCarthy said he's bringing Collins along slowly because of his earlier absences.
Nothing has been mandatory for the players yet but that will change once the Packers' formal mini-camp begins next week.
