General manager Doug Melvin says the Milwaukee Brewers might not be able to afford catcher Jason Kendall next year and it could be time to bring up Double A catching prospect Jonathan Lucroy.

Kendall, 35, is a free agent who made $5 million this year.

Melvin met with Kendall's agents last night at the Major League GM's meetings in Chicago.

And if he can't convince Kendall to take something less, Melvin says he might let him go. Melvin said Kendall works well with the pitching staff, and he'll probably want to play a lot of games again.

But Melvin said he's not sure if the Brewers can keep spending $5 million on the catching spot.

He's talking about bringing up Jonathan Lucroy, 23, who hit .267 at Double A Huntsville this year with nine homers and 66 RBI's.

Lucroy could share time with Milwaukee's other catching prospect, Angel Salome.

He had health problems this year which held him to 82 games, batting .286 with six homers and 44 RBI's.

Kendall has been the Brewers' main catcher for two years. He hit .241 in 134 games this past season with a pair of homers and 43 RBI's.
