Middle Border Conference boys golf race should be close again
New Richmond and Osceola slugged it out for the Middle Border Conference boys golf championship in 2013 and it looks like that could be the scenario again in the 2014 MBC golf race.
The MBC golfers played their first match of the season on Monday at Clifton Highlands Golf Course, with Osceola edging New Richmond by one stroke for the team victory.
New Richmond coach Jim Saliny said his team’s goal is to win the conference title, but the Tigers recognize it will be another prolonged battle with Osceola. With the Tigers only having a handful of rounds of practice in before Monday’s match, Saliny said he’s expecting to see steady improvement from the team.
The bright spot Monday for the Tigers was the play of senior Tanner Wisemiller. He took a double bogey and a bogey on his first two holes. Wisemiller righted himself, playing excellent golf the rest of the day. He finished his round with a pair of birdies to end the round with a 37.
“He showed some maturity,” Saliny said of Wisemiller’s round.
Somerset placed fourth in Monday’s match with a score of 181. The Spartans return four players from last season’s varsity lineup.
“We have some experience but we also have some good young golfers coming up. We should have a pretty good team by the end of the season,” said Somerset coach Bill Powers.
The Spartans were led by junior Hunter Iverson on Monday. He shot a 41 in the windy conditions, not using more than five strokes on any hole.
The MBC golf schedule heats up next week. Ellsworth will host a conference match on Monday and the New Richmond Golf Club will be the location for a conference match next Wednesday.
Somerset and Baldwin-Woodville are the hosts for a new tournament that will host 17 schools this weekend. Golfers will play at Pheasant Hills in Hammond on Friday. The second day of the tournament will be played at Bristol Ridge Golf Club in Somerset on Saturday. Action starts on Friday at 1 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m.
