Dairy farmers won a battle when Congress voted to keep paying for the Iraq war.

That's because the war funding bill also extends the Milk Income Loss Contract program by another month.

The federal safety net was supposed to expire in August.

Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., says it's important to keep the program going through September so its funding can be used as a base for negotiating a further extension into October.

That's when the next five-year Farm Bill takes effect.

Wisconsin's family farms are among the biggest users of the milk program which provides federal subsidies when market prices fall below certain levels.

The program was cut out of the initial draft of the new Farm Bill which came out this week.

Kohl says he and other lawmakers from dairy states will keep hammering away at their colleagues to approve an extension.
