Wisconsin's dairy cows kept working harder in March than the year before.

Total milk production was up 1.7 percent, at just more than 2 billion pounds.

Each cow made an average of 20 more pounds of milk, or about 1,660 pounds.

Wisconsin added 5,000 cows over the last year.

As good as those numbers sound, they're still below the national average.

Milk production in the 23 major dairy states was up 2.4 percent from the previous year, 0.7 more than Wisconsin.

California, the nation's top milk producer, had the same increase as the national hike with 47,000 more cows.

For the first quarter of the year, milk output rose 3.2 percent nationally, and 2.4 percent in Wisconsin.
