The Cubs are now two games behind front-running St. Louis, with the Brewers at three back.

Jonny Gomes broke a 3-3 tie for the Reds Sunday with a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Seth McClung, who took the loss to go 3-3.

Ex-Brewer David Weathers got the win by throwing a scoreless eighth. He's now 2-2.

Ex-Milwaukee closer Francisco Cordero threw a perfect ninth for his 22nd save in 23 chances.

Yovani Gallardo earned a quality start, giving up three runs in six innings with seven strikeouts. But the Brewers have lost in Gallardo's last four appearances. Gomes drove in three runs on the day, with a single to go with his two-run blast.

Brandon Phillips had a two-run single for the Reds, who salvaged a split of their four-game set with Milwaukee.

Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer and fell a triple short of the cycle, as the Brewers fell to 11-20 in day games.

Ryan Braun scored, but went 0-4 in his first game since hurting a thumb when he was hit by a pitch Friday night.

The Brewers will open a three-game series in Pittsburgh tonight.

Right-hander Mike Burns will face Pirates' right-hander Ross Ohlendorf.
