A multi-car accident on westbound I-94 Monday morning closed the freeway for a time and backed up traffic on I-94 for several miles.

The accident occurred on the freeway in front of Mike's Standard. An employee at Mike's said at least five or six vehicles were involved in the accident. At least one person was transported by ambulance, but it did not appear that any of the injuries were life-threatening.

A state trooper said one driver apparently lost control on the frost-covered road, spun out of control across three lanes, struck the median and came to rest facing the wrong way. Other damaged vehicles were on both sides of the westbound lanes, prompting the closure to ensure emergency responders' safety.

Westbound lanes were blocked for a time, before at least one lane was opened shortly after 8 a.m. The initial call came at 7:40 a.m. Responding to the scene were the State Patrol, Hudson Police Department, St. Croix County Sheriff's Department, Hudson Fire Department and St. Croix EMS.

Traffic also backed up on west-bound Coulee Road in Hudson as commuters attempted to bypass the freeway accident. Cars were being towed by at least two agencies, Mike's Standard and Jerry's Towing.
