Near Alma, father drowns as children look on
A Father's Day outing on the Mississippi River proved to be tragic for a family from Rochester, Minn.
Buffalo County officials say they've recovered the body of David Kuhlman, 42, who went missing Sunday in the Mississippi River just south of the lock and dam at Alma.
The incident started at around 5:23 p.m. Sunday when Kuhlman was in the water near his boat without a life preserver on.
According to the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department, the man began having problems staying afloat.
In the boat were the Kuhlman's three children who were between the ages of 9 and 13 years old.
With a life preserver on, the 13-year-old jumped into the water, but he was not able to grab the man before he slipped away and the family lost sight of him.
The spokesman said that the Kuhlman's body was recovered just south of Alma at around 9:45 a.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Gloria Tullius, Buffalo County coroner.
Assisting Buffalo County in the search were teams from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, staff from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lock and Dam No. 4, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Tri-Community Fire and Rescue and the Winona County (Minn.) dive and rescue team, and Wabasha County (Minn.) Sheriff's Department.
