New events served up at upcoming Pea Soup Days
There are new events at the Pea Soup Days celebration June 9-12 in Somerset.
A craft fair has been added to the lineup on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. at River Road in Village Park.
Gwen Wright, co-owner of All Up in Your Business, which is organizing the craft sale, said that they have approximately 30 businesses so far.
"We'd love to get more handmade crafts and upcycling products," said Wright. "Or if you have a business that you want to promote."
The cost is $40 for a 10-by-10 foot spot outside. Given the unpredictable weather, it is recommended to bring a tent or canopy. Should a vendor need electricity, there is a $25 extra fee.
For more information, or to register for a spot, contact Wright at 715-684-9506 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org
All cooks are invited to take part in a pea soup contest on Saturday, June 11, from 1-3 p.m. under the big tent in Village Park. There is a $10 registration fee payable to the Somerset Chamber due Friday, June 3.
Power, dixie cups and spoons will be provided; however, participants will need to bring a 50 foot extension cord, three of more gallons of their pea soup and a voting container. The winner will be the entry that gathers the most "vote coins" in their container.
The "vote coins" are available for a donation from the Somerset Chamber that day.
Casey Goessl, Chamber president, said the money collected will go toward Camp Needlepoint.
For more information, or to enter the contest, contact Bridget Holman at 507-271-9563.
There will also be a talent show under the big tent that evening from 5-7 p.m. Registration is free, but deadline to register is Friday, June 3, to the Somerset Chamber (email: email@example.com). Interested parties can send their name, age, phone, whether it's an individual or group, type of act/talent and brief background of performance experience.
The acts must be family-friendly and no longer than five minutes. A piano and microphone will be provided. Acts will be judged on creativity and the top three winners will receive savings bonds.
Kiddie Tractor Pull
Another new event is the kiddie tractor pull under the big tent on Saturday, June 12, at 1 p.m. Registration is 12:30 p.m. on Sunday; there is no fee.
"We were trying to implement more kid-based events on Sunday," explained Goessl. "In the past we've had a children's band, but this event will involve some of the older kids too."
The tractors and equipment will be furnished for participants. Each age will be its own category, from 4-12 years old. Trophies will be awarded.
Goessl also said this event is a qualifier for the kiddie state tractor pull event later in the summer.
Last year the Saturday night fireworks show was rained out during Pea Soup Days.
This year, the fireworks are scheduled for Friday night at dusk.
"There are two reasons for the change," began Goessl. "First, if we have it on Friday we get more fireworks for the same price. Second, this builds in a rain day for Saturday."
The fireworks will be in Village Park.
