New Richmond boys hockey draws second seed in sectional bracket

The goal for the New Richmond boys hockey team is to win at least three WIAA playoff games.

That would earn them a trip to Madison for their first appearance in the WIAA Boys State Hockey Tournament since the 2003 season.

The Tigers received the second seed in the Section 1 bracket that was voted upon by sectional coaches on Sunday.

The WIAA predetermines sites for the hockey sectional championship games. New Richmond is the predetermined site for this year's sectional championship game. The sectional title will be decided at the New Richmond Sports Center on Saturday, Feb. 26.

Superior earned the top seed in the sectional bracketing. New Richmond was next in the seeding, followed by Menomonie, River Falls and Hudson. All those teams receive opening round byes on Feb. 15.

The surprise of the seeding process was Menomonie. A recent win over Superior, plus a win over River Falls on Saturday, propelled Menomonie up to the third seed.

Here are the sectional games slated for Tuesday, Feb. 15:

Baldwin-Woodville (9) at Somerset (8) at 7 p.m.; winner plays at Superior on Feb. 17;

Barron (11) at Burnett County in Grantsburg (6) at 7 p.m.; winner plays at Menomonie on Feb. 17;

Spooner (10) at Amery (7) at 7 p.m.; winner plays at New Richmond on Feb. 17.

The fourth Feb. 17 game features Hudson playing at River Falls.

Girls hockey

New Richmond's girls hockey team received the seventh seed in the girls sectional bracket that was voted upon on Sunday.

The Tigers will open tournament play on Thursday, Feb. 17, when they play at Hayward at 7 p.m. Hayward is the second seed in the tournament bracket.

This is an extremely strong bracket, with the top four teams all having spent time ranked in the top 10 in the state this season. The St. Croix Valley Fusion, the defending state champion, earned the top seed, followed by Hudson, Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls.

The sectional championship will be played on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Chippewa Falls Ice Rink.

Here are the pairings for the opening round of the tournament on Feb. 17:

Superior (8) at St. Croix Valley Fusion at River Falls at 7 p.m.;

Hudson (5) at Chippewa Falls (4) at 7 p.m.

Burnett County (6) at Eau Claire Stars (3) at TBD;

New Richmond (7) at Hayward (2) at 7 p.m.
