New Richmond Forensics fares well at state

The New Richmond Senior High School Forensics team did not let the snow and ice of last Friday morning, April 19, deter them from traveling to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the annual Wisconsin High School Forensic Association's Speech Competition.

Twenty-eight students, along with coaches Danette Tellijohn, Sarah Fastelin and judge Betty Groboski, boarded a Croix Valley coach bus at 8:30 a.m. for their trip to Madison.

The students enjoyed a group dinner at Olive Garden and then headed to the university for their competition. The cold and rain did not prove for a nice evening to be on campus but spirits were still high for the New Richmond team.

Armed with a snowboard and boots, a Haegum and 50 red solo cups for the three demonstration speakers, the other students had either a black-backed script or little white notecard. They headed off in small groups to speak in one of 15 campus buildings.

Outcomes were fantastic as the students returned to headquarters to meet their coaches and collect their medals. New Richmond had three gold medal winners with perfect scores of 25. They were juniors Carly Ferguson in prose; Franki Wood in poetry; and Christian Martin in radio.

Silver medal winners were Hyeun Kim, demonstration; Melissa Graham and Josie Bessac, demonstration; Tanner Yehlik, demonstration; Gus Franchere, four-minute; Steph Nelson, oratory; Madeline Kestner, special occasion; Alexandra Arrhen, special occasion; Hailey Bessac, prose; Abby Martin, prose; Allie Hassler, prose; Brittany Weninger, solo acting; Mikayla Gefeke, solo acting; and Jacob Orr, solo acting.

Bronze medal winners were Kayla Lindloff, four-minute; Matt Schmit four-minute; Gregoria Mandias, oratory; Breelyn Karno, farrago; Cassie Geyer, poetry; Isabella Kilibarda, poetry; and the play acting group of Sydney Zahradka, Rachel Greaner, Katarina Galvan, Laura Lusardi and Megan Wefel.

Madison Dennhardt qualified for state, but did not perform because of a previous commitment.

Saturday morning dawned sunny and chilly in Madison but it was a perfect day to spend a morning on State Street and take in the Farmer's Market, street musicians, some shopping, and plenty of food. The bus returned to New Richmond at about 5:30 p.m. with an official police escort.

Another great season for the New Richmond High School Forensics team.
