New Richmond girls complete unbeaten MBC golf season

There was no stopping the New Richmond girls golf team in its quest for the 2013 Middle Border Conference championship.

The Tigers completed a perfect MBC season by winning the 2013 conference tournament, played last Thursday at Krooked Kreek Golf Course in Osceola.

The Tigers won the conference tournament by shooting 349, which was 20 strokes better than second place Osceola. Somerset took third at 423.

New Richmond had the top three individual finishers in the conference tournament and those three girls also took the top three spots in the 2013 All-Middle Border Conference Team. Senior Alex Wheeler shot 79 to earn medalist honors in the conference tournament. She also finished as the top scorer in the conference for the 2013 season.

One stroke behind Wheeler was Tiger senior Megan Chelberg, who also ranked second in the overall conference points total. Tiger coach Neal Ziller said Wheeler and Chelberg gave the team an unbeatable 1-2 tandem.

“Both girls are great leaders and great players,” Ziller said.

Finishing third in the conference tournament and in the conference standings was Tiger junior Hannah Baker. Ziller said Baker hits an extremely straight drive, which keeps her out of troublesome areas on most holes.

Tiger junior Emma Ongstad also earned all-conference honors by finishing 10th in the overall conference points ledger. Like Baker, Ongstad is in her first season on the varsity squad. She struggled a bit on the back nine at Krooked Kreek to bring her final score up to 104.

Freshman Maddie McCann was the Tigers’ fifth player. Ziller said she showed significant progress in the tournament. He said when she can rid herself of the one or two bad holes per round, her score will come down more.

The Tigers will host the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament this Wednesday. The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams will advance to the sectional tournament, which will be played next Tuesday in La Crosse. The top two teams in the sectional meet and the top three players not on those teams, will qualify for the WIAA state championships in Madison on Oct. 14-15.

@t:Spartan junior Stacy Bracht finished fourth in the conference tournament and she also produced one of the best shots of the day. Bracht drained a 35-foot putt from the fringe on the seventh hole at Krooked Kreek.

Bracht’s score of 88 finished fourth in the conference tournament and it moved her up to fifth in the overall MBC rankings.

Somerset coach Bill Powers said the team set the goal at the start of the season to finish in third place in the conference and they accomplished that goal. The Spartans pulled away from Prescott and St. Croix Central, who were threats early in the season to finish ahead of Somerset.

Powers said the Spartans played well on the front nine, but like many of the teams, they struggled somewhat on the back nine. The exception was senior Meghan Wolner. After shooting a 56 on the front, Wolner closed strongly to get a 48 on the back nine. Her score tied for eighth best on the back nine in the tournament.

@t:The Panthers finished sixth in the conference tournament and that forced them to settle for fifth place in the final overall MBC standings. The Panthers weren’t able to get any girls in the top 10 players in the conference this season. The top finisher for the Panthers was junior Brittany Nabors. She finished 13th in the final conference standings. She also performed capably in the conference tournament. Her score of 101 placed 12th in the tournament.
