New Richmond girls tennis gets to relax in 7-0 victory
Every match for the New Richmond girls tennis team this season has been a battle.
The Tigers finally got their first chance to relax on the court this season, scoring a 7-0 win over Mondovi in a Middle Border Conference match on the Tigers' home courts last Thursday.
Mondovi and New Richmond were two of the MBC teams hit most severely by graduation last season. Mondovi graduated six players from its 2012 lineup while the Tigers returned just two starters from last season.
Despite the major turnover in the roster, the Tigers have rebounded well this season. They went into Thursday's match heavily favored. Tiger coach Denise Devereux said this was a good opportunity for the Tigers to relax and play with a comfort level. The Tigers were able to win all seven matches without losing a set.
Devereux did give her team specific goals for this match, knowing the likelihood of a team victory. She had the Tigers focus on one or two specific aspects in each match, so each Tiger could continue to build their skills. She said the team was assigned the goal of pushing themselves to play to the best of their abilities.
"I was really pleased with how the girls did that," Devereux said.
The Tigers resume their conference schedule with a home match this Thursday against Ellsworth. The Tigers will also play at Osceola in MBC action next Tuesday. In between, the Tigers will play in a tournament at Menomonie on Saturday. This is a traditionally strong tournament where the Tigers are guaranteed three matches. Opponents such as Hudson, Chippewa Falls, Whitewater and Winona, Minn. have been lined up against the Tigers in past years of the tournament.
