The New Richmond and Menomonie girls tennis teams have always seemed to be equally matched and have provided excellent competition for each other.

So when they met in the season-opening match for both teams last Friday, a 5-2 win on the Mustangs’ home courts provided a huge boost of confidence for the New Richmond girls.

Everyone in the New Richmond lineup is making a step upward in the competitive scale this season after graduating one singles player Mattie Kidder and half of the one doubles team. The biggest step up was made by senior Christian Weaver, who was the Tigers’ two singles player last season. Weaver won handily on Friday, 6-0, 6-3, over Alli Norder.

“Christian came out really strong,” said Tiger coach Denise Devereux. “She looked confident. Her feet were moving well.”

Three of the Tigers were seeing action in their first-ever varsity match. That included freshman Greta Bakke at three singles, sophomore Erin Peterson at one doubles and sophomore Hailie Schultz at three doubles.

That leaves seven players returning with varsity experience, ranging from a few matches to several years. Devereux said she is still tinkering with the doubles lineup, trying to decide which girls fit together best. She said she does like the combination at one doubles with Peterson teaming with senior Kaitlynn Belisle.

“That’s a jump up for Erin, she was middle JV last year. She’s got the power and competitiveness. There’s a good chemistry between her and Kaitlynn,” Devereux said.

Belisle and Peterson looked good in their first match, winning in three sets. The Tigers also got a win at two doubles from Kjrsten Faaren and Gaby Kupke.

In the singles lineup, the Tigers also received wins from Greta Bakke and Dadez.

The Tigers resume their schedule with a match at Altoona this Friday. The Tigers begin their Middle Border Conference schedule on Thursday, Aug. 28, when they play at Mondovi. The Tigers’ first home match of the season will be played on Thursday, Sept. 4, against Ellsworth.
