The WIAA Division 1 regional tournament was played at the New Richmond Golf Club last Wednesday. New Richmond placed second in that tournament, earning the Tigers a berth in this Tuesday’s WIAA sectional tournament in La Crosse. The top two finishers among the eight teams in the sectional meet will qualify for state.

The state tournament will be played at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison next Monday and Tuesday.

The Tigers knew they’d run up against some strong competition in the regional meet, where they are mixed in with most of the Big Rivers Conference teams. River Falls and Eau Claire North were expected to be the Tigers’ main competition. North had an excellent day, winning the regional title by shooting 347. The Tigers were four strokes behind the Huskies, with River Falls in third place at 360.

Two New Richmond girls took the top spots in the regional, just as they’d done in the Middle Border Conference tournament. New Richmond senior Alex Wheeler was the regional medalist with a 78. Classmate Megan Chelberg took second place with an 81.

Juniors Hannah Baker and Emma Ongstad were the Tigers’ third and fourth players in the regional. Baker finished with a 93, which placed 10th in the regional meet. Ongstad finished at 99. Freshman Maddi McCann was the Tigers’ fifth player, shooting a 110.

Tiger coach Neal Ziller said the girls weren’t satisfied with their play in the regional tournament. They felt they had issues with their putting strokes and the players and coaches were going to spend their practices last week polishing their putting.

Ziller said one of the skills that sets Wheeler and Chelberg apart is their ability to recover from a bad shot. That means neither is putting any large numbers on their scorecard. In the regional meet, they each had a seven as their worst score of the day. Ziller said Baker is learning the same skill and its helping her become more consistent.

The team was scheduled to drive to La Crosse on Monday so the girls could get in a practice round before playing in the sectional tournament on Tuesday.
