Two impressive wins were the result of a trip to Barron last Tuesday for the New Richmond American Legion Post 80 baseball team.

Post 80 again used two strong pitching performances, mixed with some timely hitting, to earn the wins. Post 80 opened the evening with a 5-0 win, then rolled to a 9-1 win in the second of the five-inning games. The two wins raise New Richmond’s record to 3-1 in the Heart Lake Border Legion League.

The New Richmond pitchers did not allow an earned run in either game. Noah Berger pitched the three-hit shutout in the opening game. He struck out nine Barron batters.

“Noah pitched so well, they were overmatched,” said New Richmond coach Paul Kittel. “They had a hard time catching up to his fastball.”

Cam Hausman was just as strong in the second game. Barron’s only run was scored in the fifth inning and it was unearned.

Post 80 scored in three different innings of the first game. Austin Juhl and Grant Momchilovich both doubled to produce a run in the first inning. New Richmond put the game out of reach with three runs in the second inning. Hunter Charland was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Parker Coleman, Jordan Fischer and Nick Barrera followed with singles. Cole Peterson launched a sacrifice fly to bring home the third run.

Fischer led off the fourth inning, moved to third on a pair of passed balls and scored on Juhl’s groundout for the final New Richmond run.

Post 80 wasted no time taking charge of the second game, scoring five runs in the first inning and four more in the second inning. Peterson and Juhl led off the first inning with singles. Peterson scored when Momchilovich reached on an error. Hausman followed with a double that brought home two runs. He scored on Berger’s single and Berger would later score on Charland’s sacrifice fly.

Juhl started the second inning with a walk and he scored on Caleb Manecke’s double. Hausman delivered another double to chase home Manecke. Charland and Coleman followed with RBI singles.

Post 80 was scheduled to host the Luck-Frederic team last Thursday, but the games were rained out. A makeup date has not yet been scheduled.

The New Richmond boys will travel to River Falls for a 5 p.m. game this Wednesday, playing at the new ballfield that has been constructed in River Falls. New Richmond returns to league play on Thursday with a home double-header against Bloomer which begins at 5:30 p.m. New Richmond will also be at home at Citizens Field next Tuesday, hosting Baldwin in a pair of games.
