New Richmond Legion team record stands at 5-1
The New Richmond American Legion baseball team holds a 5-1 record after its games last week.
The Tigers swept a pair of games at Amery last Tuesday. They split their two games at Osceola last Thursday. Last Thursday's double-header with Luck was postponed due to wet grounds.
The best news out of last week's play was New Richmond's pitching continues to be solid. Corey Berger, Nick Swystun and Michael Jansen all threw complete game wins during the week.
Amery was no match for New Richmond last Tuesday. New Richmond won the opening game 16-1 and took the second game by a 15-0 count.
Jack Johnson and Jansen each scored four times in the opening game. Jansen crushed the ball, with a triple, two doubles and a single. Swystun delivered a double and two singles in the opener.
Jansen threw the one-hit shutout in the second game, after Swystun had allowed two hits in the opener. Jeremy Slicer scored four runs in the second game and Jared Kidder led the team with three hits.
Osceola's Legion team provided good competition in Friday's games. New Richmond won the opening game by a 9-1 score, but Osceola took the second game 3-2.
Berger pitched the win, allowing two hits. Berger and Dan Leavens each clouted two-run homers in the fifth inning.
In the second game Swystun lost a good pitching battle to Osceola's Ryan Burkhamer. New Richmond was held to two hits in the game, but one of them was Berger's second homer of the night.
New Richmond coach Mark Kohlrusch said he is pushing the players to things that they want to improve on in these games.
Kohlrusch said the boys are showing that they have ability as hitters, but the team needs players to step up and show they want jobs on defense. He said all of the outfield positions, as well as second base, are positions waiting to be earned by anyone who can play consistent defense.
The schedule remains busy, with a pair of home games against St. Croix Falls on Thursday. The Legion team will play in a tournament at Arcadia on Saturday, with games at 10 a.m. and noon. Next Tuesday the New Richmond boys will get a good test, when the Baldwin team comes for a visit.
Somerset's Legion will be playing at Unity this Thursday. Somerset's boys will play at home next Tuesday, with Amery as the visiting team.
