Awards were presented near the conclusion of the press association's annual 155th annual convention, held at the Radisson Conference Center near the Oneida Casino near Green Bay last weekend.

The conference, "Wisconsin Newspapers: Our Great Story," brought together presenters to provide professional development to weekly, daily and college newspaper reporters, editors, ad directors and publishers.

The gathering culminated with presentation of awards at a Friday evening banquet. This year's Better Newspaper Contest drew 2,900 entries from more than 140 of the state's approximately 300 weekly and daily newspapers.

Judging the contest this year were members of the Texas Newspaper Association. Entries came from coverage and advertisements which were published in late 2007 and the first nine months of 2008.

Among the awards for the New Richmond News were:

Open Record/FOI Award

Second Award - New Richmond News: ("Committee structure violates Open Meeting regulations" Jeff Holmquist): A wholly local focus, without obscure generalized information. The only thing that kept this from being No. 1 is the 'We're Sorry' apology. No apology is necessary for pointing out a clear violation of the law.

Local Column

Second Award - New Richmond News: ("Nike poster speaks truth; Promise & riches; From Donny to Troy;" - Jeff Holmquist): All these were great! Loved taking daughter to High School Musical on Ice! Great on the school official admitting his faults, very moving. E-mail was good, not as good as others.

Enterprise/Interpretive Reporting

Second Award - New Richmond News: ("Wisconsin rural life" - Jeff Holmquist, Gail Winship, Dave Newman, Shay Tilander, Julia Ybarra-Young): Especially like the multi-faceted approach to explain this phenomenon.

Headlines

Second Award - New Richmond News: ("Express delivery saves postmaster;" "City wants mow money;" - Jeff Holmquist): Two very strong heads. The third one was not far off. This entry might have won in any other contest, but the top three newspapers were all strong.
