New Richmond out, Somerset still alive in soccer playoffs
New Richmond was upset in the opening round of WIAA regional boys soccer tournament action, while Somerset barely avoided an upset.
New Richmond, the number seven seed in the Division 1 sectional bracket, lost to 10th seed Menomonie 1-0 on Tuesday. New Richmond struggled to get its offense on track throughout the wind-swept game Tuesday.
Somerset fell behind Baldwin-Woodville 1-0 early in Tuesday's Division 2 regional tournament game. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead late in the first half on a penalty kick goal by Jon Bucklew.
Neither team scored in the second half, with Somerset holding on for the 2-1 win.
Somerset, the third seed in the regional, will play at Ashland at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the regional final. Ashland, the second seed, defeated Osceola 10-0 on Tuesday.
