The Tigers competed in the Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association meet in River Falls, one of four regional meets they will compete in during the season.

The seven state qualifiers are all from the Tiger girls team. They include Vickie Holbrook, Maddie Reimenschneider, Tina Montpetit, Bethany Haag, Tamarah Clemmens, Sabrina Stacken and Sabrina Kayes.

Haag was named as the overall top female lifter in the meet. She was the champion in the 148-pound class. The top overall lifter award is based on a formula where total weight lifted is multiplied by a coefficient based on the lifter’s weight.

New Richmond’s girls took first place among the eight teams competing in Saturday’s meet, earning 93 points. Eau Claire North took second place.

For the first time, the New Richmond boys placed in a meet. They earned 67 points, finishing second behind the 84 points earned by Eau Claire North.

The Tigers have 52 lifters on their roster this season. The Tigers took 38 lifters to Saturday’s meet, including 15 who were competing for the first time.

“They’re a hard working group,” Tiger coach Brian Kaczmarski said of the team. “Our goal is to keep increasing the size of the program and to keep improving our lifts.”

He said the hope is to have Tiger boys and girls squads compete at state. It takes 10 state qualifiers to compete as a team at the state level. The Tiger girls qualified last year and earned fourth place in the state meet.

Kaczmarski said there has been strong parental support and strong support from the school district. He said there is now a banner for the teams in the high school gym along with the other varsity sports.

The next competition for the Tigers will be on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they take part in a regional meet in Osceola.
