New Richmond, SCC boys advance to Saturday's basketball regional finals
The New Richmond boys made their final varsity game in the New Richmond High School gym a success by beating Osceola 40-31 in the second round of Division 2 regionals on Thursday night.
With the win New Richmond advances to the regional final, which will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Rice Lake High School. The Tigers' opponent in the regional final will be Northwestern, which beat Amery 63-54 tonight.
Tickets for Saturday's game are available from the New Richmond High School office throughout the day Friday. There will not be tickets available in Rice Lake. Cost of tickets is $4.
New Richmond won on Thursday due the the strength of its defense. Led by Justice Harvieux and Darren O'Flanagan, the Tigers played suffocating defense on Osceola's guards.
The Tigers led by one point at halftime, 18-17. Osceola scored the first hoop of the second half. The Tigers answered with six straight points to lead 24-19. The Tigers never gave up the lead after that.
Jared Kidder showed his versatility again in leading the Tigers with 15 points. The Tigers were 14-17 from the free throw line. That was led by sophomore Dalton Sabby, who went 6-6 in the final minutes, finishing with nine points.
In Division 3, St. Croix Central advanced to Saturday's regional final with a 54-40 win over St. Croix Falls. Central will play in the regional final at Amery on Saturday in a 1 p.m. start. The Panthers' opponent on Saturday will be Webster. Webster handled Prescott on Thursday, 59-41.
