New Richmond school calendar nears completion
New Richmond Wisconsin 127 South Knowles Avenue 54017

New Richmond School District's 2013-14 school calendar is inching closer to completion after several discussions with staff and administration.

The only question remaining is whether to include a spring break or not, said Morrie Veilleux, district administrator.

When asked, the staff at the elementary level agreed that they prefer a spring break. At the secondary levels, staff prefer that there not be a break.

After some discussion at the Jan. 29 board meeting, members Larry Moore and Marilyn Duerst said they prefer there not be a spring break and that the school year ends earlier in June.

By eliminating the spring break and ending the school year earlier, teachers, staff and students would also have more time to prepare for Summer Stretch, Veilleux said.

Chris Skoglund, board member, said she favors the elimination of a spring break because she believes it's better for the students.

Studies have shown that students are often distracted in the days leading up to a break and take additional time to settle back into a routine during the days coming back from a break.

A tentative calendar is now being drafted for final staff input. The school board will vote on finalizing that calendar at its Feb. 18 meeting.
