New Richmond Shooting Club performs well in first state competition
The first opportunity for members of the New Richmond Shooting Club trapshooting team to compete at the state level turned out quite well.
Twelve members of the shooting club competed in the state shoot at the Waukesha Gun Club on Saturday. A total of 990 shooters were competing. Students in the New Richmond Shooting Club are from New Richmond and Somerset and range in age from 12-18 years old. They shoot at the Willow River Rod and Gun Club.
Two of the local shooters finished in the top 10 percent of the shooters competing at the state level. Austin Headlee placed 56th, hitting 94 of 100 clays. He had a perfect 25 score in his final round and he hit the final 42 targets he saw.
Brian Dalton finished 75th in the tournament. He also had a percent round, hitting all 25 clays in his third round.
Headlee, Dalton, Alex Coyle, Zach Mundth and Hunter Childs were New Richmond’s five varsity shooters at the state meet. Team results won’t be announced until later this week. Also competing at the meet for New Richmond were James Dalton, Connor Johnson, Lorin Bauer, Dalton LaVenture, Zac Cahanes, Cole Erickson and Ben Cahane.
The team was led to state by coaches Jessica Marshinke and Brian Headlee.
Headlee said this was the highest level of competition the local shooters have ever competed against and it will help them as they move forward in their careers. None of the team members graduated this spring, so the team should come back even stronger in 2015. An information meeting for next season will be held in December or January.
“The squad we have will be a lot more experienced,” Headlee said. He said plans will be made to get team members several rounds of shooting in before next season begins.
One of the advantages to competing on the trap team is it doesn’t preclude shooters from participating in other sports or school events in the spring. The trap shooting is done one night per week and schedules offer flexibility so students can build their trapshooting schedule around their other events.
