New Richmond, Somerset boys hockey teams reach sectionals
It took strong finishes from both teams, but the New Richmond and Somerset boys hockey teams advanced to the WIAA sectional tournaments with wins on Thursday night.
New Richmond rallied from a 3-2 deficit, scoring the last three goals of the game to defeat Amery 5-3 on Thursday at the New Richmond Sports Center. The Tigers, the fourth seed in the sectional bracket, will skate at top-seeded Superior next Tuesday. Superior advanced to the sectionals with a 5-2 win over River Falls on Thursday. Tuesday's sectional semifinal will be played at 7 p.m. at Superior's Wessman Arena.
Somerset overcame a disastrous first period to defeat Menomonie 3-2 on Thursday at the Somerset Ice Arena. Menomonie scored twice in the first period. Somerset knotted the score in the second period, then scored the only goal of the third period.
Somerset will host Hudson at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the other sectional semifinal game. Hudson defeated WSFLG 6-2 on Thursday to advance to the sectional semifinal.
The New Richmond girls hockey team saw its season come to an end on Thursday. The Tigers were defeated 12-0 by top-seeded Hayward in the WIAA girls hockey regional finals.
