New Richmond, Somerset dance teams compete at Middle Border meet
The New Richmond and Somerset dance team were part of a three-conference event held at Rice Lake High School on Saturday.
New Richmond's dance team won the Middle Border Conference championship in the kick competition, holding on to the New Richmond tradition.
Coach Ali Saliny said, "Our kick routine is great, and so much fun to watch. Our team has always done well in this category, and this year was no exception."
The Tigers placed second in the pom category, falling right behind Prescott.
"Our pom routine was great but Prescott is hard to beat, they always have been," Saliny said.
New Richmond had five girls make the All-Middle Border Conference teams based on their solos and duets which were judged early that day. First team all-conference honors went to Jensen Hagen, whose solo placed third in the conference. Second team all-conference honors went to Erika Bohmke, Kim Miller, Leah Bauer and Megan Chelberg.
Up next for the Tiger dance team is the regional competition.
"We know what we need to do in the next two weeks to come out on top at the regional competition. The competition will be very strong and hard to beat but this team is dedicated, passionate and strong so I'm excited to see what happens at regionals," Saliny added.
This was the first year for the Somerset dance team to compete at conference after getting approval to be supported by the school district a month ago. Somerset took fourth in the pom competition at the conference meet. Somerset's duet of Hannah Barritt and Laura Moulton took fifth place among all Middle Border Conference small group dance ensembles.
"Knowing that we had the school and community behind us this year gave the girls a big boost in confidence," said Somerset coach Hailley Leverty. "We have a young team, mostly sophomores and juniors, versus many other teams that are predominantly seniors. In the face of tough competition, our team really stepped it up a notch in practicing harder and longer and truly performing for the mere two minutes that our team is allotted at competition."
