The New Richmond boys tennis team wasn't going to let an opportunity to play slip away.

The Tigers were scheduled to play at Osceola last Tuesday. The Chieftains' courts weren't playable and Osceola turned down New Richmond's invitation to play on the Tigers' courts. So Tiger coach Mike Montello and Athletic Director Casey Eckardt got on the phone and found an opponent who did want to play. New Richmond and Ellsworth were scheduled to play last Thursday, but the weather forecasts left little chance for that match to go off on schedule. So Ellsworth agreed to come to New Richmond two days early to get the match completed.

New Richmond was able to notch a 7-0 win in the first Middle Border Conference clash of the season for both teams.

It took some work from the New Richmond players and coaches to get the courts ready for Tuesday's match. They had to remove the snow from the courts and around the perimeter so the excess water could drain off. They then used large rubber rollers to push the water off the courts.

"It is labor intensive but is our only option," said Tiger coach Mike Montello.

Once the match got started, the Tigers were clearly in command. Ellsworth had nine players available and this was the first year of competitive tennis for several of them.

The Tigers had to come back in two matches where Ellsworth got an early advantage. The most competitive match of the night was at two singles. Ellsworth senior Mike Auckland got an early lead against Tiger senior Dustin Reed. Reed adjusted his game and was able to come back for a 6-4, 6-2 win.

The Tiger one doubles team of Isaiah Hobbs and Jack Hop fell behind 3-0 in the opening set. The Tiger duo regrouped, coming back to win 6-4, 6-0.

The next match scheduled for the Tigers is a home contest this Thursday against Altoona. The Tigers are scheduled to travel to Osceola on Monday to make up last Tuesday's postponement. The Tigers will also be travelling next Tuesday, heading to Durand for another conference match.
