New Richmond tennis tops short-handed Ellsworth 7-0
The long-awaited home opener for the New Richmond girls tennis team was a complete success, with the Tigers rolling past Ellsworth 7-0 last Thursday.
Ellsworth only had nine girls on its roster, so the Tigers received a forfeit at four singles.
The Tiger coaches used this opportunity to give Kaycie Anderson and Mattie Kidder another match at one doubles. They handled the assignment with no trouble, winning 6-0, 6-0. Tiger coach Denise Devereux said Anderson and Kidder maintained a high level of play against a less experienced team.
"They were crisp and clean in their volleys and returns," Devereux said.
The only match that went to three sets was at two singles, where senior Ali Graff bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to capture the final two sets 6-4, 6-3. This was Graff's first venture into singles play and it took a set for her to get over a considerable case of nervousness.
Another Tiger who could have been nervous, but clearly wasn't, was senior Abby Berning. Berning played her first varsity match, winning the three singles flight 6-1, 6-1. She challenged her way up into the varsity lineup.
"She didn't show any jitters, she just played solid," Devereux said. "The last few weeks she's played really well."
The Tigers continue their Middle Border Conference schedule next Tuesday with a match at Unity.
