New Richmond track team advances six events to sectionals
The New Richmond track teams knew the competition would be stiff when they hosted the Division 1 regional track meet on Monday and they were right.
Despite the Tigers posting numerous personal best times and distances in the meet, the Tigers were able to get just six events to Thursday's sectional meet in Rice Lake.
All six of the New Richmond events that qualified for the sectional meet came from the girls team. The girls ranked seventh among the nine teams competing in Monday's regional meet while the Tiger boys placed ninth.
New Richmond junior Maddie Kelly qualified for sectionals in two events. She improved her time in the 800 meters by eight seconds to advance to the sectional meet. She finished with a time of 2:21, finishing less than a second off the winning time. Kelly had been seeded eighth heading into the regional 800 race.
Kelly was one of two Tigers to qualify for sectionals in the high jump. The wet, windy conditions Monday affected many events, with the jumping events being among those most affected. Kelly and Emily Kukacka were both able to clear the bar at 4-10 to qualify for sectionals. Based on earlier misses, Kelly placed third and Kukacka tied for fourth in the regional event.
Also qualifying as an individual for the Tigers was sophomore Peyton Olien. Olien ran fourth in the 200 meter dash preliminaries. She then moved up to third place in the finals, with a time of 26.78 seconds.
The Tiger girls had two relay events qualify for sectionals. Kelly and Olien are members of New Richmond's 1,600 meter relay team that advanced by placing fourth on Monday. They are joined in the team by Abby Blader and Serena Shilts. They qualified with a time of 4:12.98.
A trio of seniors will get to compete at sectionals for the Tigers in the 400-meter relay. Heidi Germain, Erika Bohmke and Rose Smith will be joined by sophomore Taylor Klemmensen in the Tigers' 400 relay. They placed fourth in the regional meet with a time of 53.56 seconds.
The sectional meet will be run at the Rice Lake High School track complex. Field events are set to begin at 4 p.m. with running events beginning at 4:45 p.m.
