New Richmond U10 softball team competes at national tournament
Getting the opportunity to play at the national level was just part of the experience for the New Richmond U10 softball team that played in the U10 national softball tournament July 26-28 in Bloomington, Minn.
The New Richmond team had recently placed fifth among 22 teams in the Minnesota state tournament.
New Richmond was the winner in one of its four games in the national tournament. Coach Christie Salmon said the softball was a great experience, but so were the many other activities that were involved in the tournament.
"The girls played really well and had quite the experiences with the 70 teams at nationals. Some were from Canada, Illinois and Nebraska," Salmon said. "They traded pins and got dressed up for the parade."
New Richmond's opponents in the tournament were Shakopee Black, OMGAA Storm, Minnetonka Blue Angels and East Ridge. The intensity of facing top teams from the Midwest was a good experience for the girls, who were seeing a faster, more aggressive style of play in the tournament.
"The girls did extremely well with learning how to steal home and play against the steal home and bunt coverage," Salmon said.
Salmon said the team was appreciative to those people who stepped up and helped sponsor the trip to nationals.
