New Richmond girl, 14, charged with attempted homicide

New Richmond U10 softball team places fifth in Minnesota state tournament

The New Richmond U10 softball team that qualified for the Minnesota state tournament over the weekend performed quite well.

The New Richmond girls were playing in a division of the B and C level teams that qualified for the state tournament. The New Richmond girls were able to take fifth place among the 22 teams in their state bracket.

New Richmond won its opening game of the tournament 6-4 and followed that with a 2-1 victory. They were defeated in their final two games at state, 6-0 and 10-5.

New Richmond coach Christi Salmon said the team gave up five runs in an inning only once in the tournament. Teams can score a maximum of five runs in an inning at this level.

"The girls executed plays and hit the ball extremely well. They are a very heads-up type team and they never give up," Salmon said.

The New Richmond team is now focusing its energy on the national tournament they will play in at Bloomington, Minn., on July 26-28.
