New Richmond's wrestlers had an excellent day at the WIAA Division 1 regional tournament on Saturday at Chippewa Falls.

The Tigers advanced eight wrestlers on to next Saturday's sectional tournament at Wausau West.


Two Tigers earned sectional championships. Shane Blackman shifted down to 126 pounds for the tournament series and won the regional title. Junior Derek Dowd needed an ultimate overtime match to win the title at 138 pounds.

Senior Dom Ficociello was the Tigers' only second place finisher at 170 pounds.

Taking third place were Bryce Younger at 120 pounds, John Keifer at 152 pounds and Kevin Kern at 195 pounds. Fourth place finishers were Austin Anderson at 145 pounds and Jake Rose at 285 pounds.

In Division 1, the top 4 wrestlers in each class advance to sectionals. In Divisions 2 and 3, the top two wrestlers in each class advance.

Somerset competed at the St. Croix Falls Division 2 regional on Saturday. The only Spartans who advanced was junior Max Praschak, who was the regional champion at 182 pounds and senior Bailey White, who took second place at 145 pounds.

St. Croix Central had a highly successful day at the Ellsworth Division 2 regional, sending seven wrestlers through to next Saturday's Amery Sectional Meet.

Ryan Gulich was Central's only regional champ at 145 pounds. Taking second place were Jake Nyhagen at 113 pounds, Drew Malecek at 120 pounds, Brian Gibb at 182 pounds, Josh VanBeek at 195 pounds, Decker Grass at 220 pounds and Jordan Winegar at 285 pounds.
